Healthy Rice Mix - Pepper Cumin Powder and Kalathu Podi / Digestive Powder

In this post I am sharing some interesting and healthy rice mix recipe which is a traditional recipe of many of the South Indian Households. Hailing from a family of people who believed that through food and some herbal mixes all kind of ailments can be cured, this is something which is used in treating indigestion. My grandma who seeks these kind of medicinal household recipes for every other system disorders, taught me some of her recipes and more the importance of them. I have personally relished these and found cure at times when needed. It might be unbelievable for the people of this antacid gel age.

Pepper and Cumin have proven to have properties that aids in proper digestion and curing gastritis issues. These two spices are considered as super spices. Just a spoon of this powder with a spoon of melted ghee added to hot rice when consumed do give us relief from indigestion issues and also improves appetite.

Kalathu Podi or Digestive Powder is something that is usually given to the newly delivered moms, or lactating mothers to get relief from indigestion and gastritis. We also call it as Pathiya Podi as it is given a must during the first three to four weeks after delivery. It helps in proper digestion and also stops vomiting in babies when they feed on the milk of the mom when she faces digestive issues. These are some recipes which I treasure and it has been transferred by my grandmom to my mom and I want to have it saved as already we are forgetting all our traditional recipes by now..Thanks to the fast food culture. I will also post the special Pathiya Kuzhambu and Pathiya Rasam for the newly deliverer moms in my upcoming posts.

Not only new moms, but anyone can take this podi with rice to get relief from indigestion and gastritis.

Narthangai Verkadalai Kuzhambu/Citron Lime Peanuts Gravy

Narthangai is called as Citron Lime or Key Lime and it is a hybrid between Lemon and Sweet Lime. It has a rough, tough dark green leathery skin with less acidic juice inside. It has lots of health benefits and it is proven that it helps in alleviating high blood pressure. It has lots of potassium in it which is very good for heart health. The juice if taken with warm water acts as an excellent blood purifier and liver cleanser. It gives cooling effect to the body and aids in proper digestion. I rather say it as Natural Antacid :)

We make dried salted form of citron lime every year during the season which can be preserved for years when perfectly done with proper drying. I love the flavour of this Citron Lime and its an excellent accompaniment for Curd Rice or Rasam Rice especially when we suffer from Nausea or even when we are sick. Wanted to have the flavour added to peanut gravy which was my plan for the day's menu and hence tried this Kuzhambu and it turned out to be very tasty and delicious.

Its best with Hot Steamed Rice or with even Curd Rice.

Healthy Breakfast Series - Lauki/ Bottle Gourd Wraps and Lettuce Cream Soup

Its a resolution for this year that I should make a completely balanced and healthy breakfast for my hubby to kick start the day and am experimenting on few Healthy Breakie Combos. In that series, today it is Lauki Wrap in my Wonder Wrap Series which I made both Sweet and Savory Versions and Lettuce Cream Soup.

Lauki/Bottle Gourd is a Vitamin C and Antioxidant Rich Veggie and it has lot of water content in it. It hydrates the body and a best remedy for Urinary Infections during Summer season. Also it helps in Weight loss and help in digestion. Being a Zero Cholesterol Veggie it helps in preventing Heart Ailments. Including this veggie in a Wrap with Paneer is a best way for making kids to eat this veggie. I made the sweet version with Iron Rich Gulkhand (Made of Rose Petals and Jaggery / Honey).

Lettuce is a well known Low calorie green leafy vegetable which is why it is included in diet by Weight Watchers. Mostly taken as Salad. It is rich in Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Protein Content. It also has lot of Vitamin C and Beta Carotene and is good for healthy heart.

Here I have given a easy Soup recipe with lettuce which can be made in less than 10 minutes and it is a fulfilling one for the breakfast.

Manithakkali Keerai Thannisaaru / Black Night Shade Greens Soup

Manithakkali Keerai / Black Night Shade is a wonder greens and it is loaded with huge amount of medicinal benefits. Similar to Agathi Keerai (Sesbania grandiflora) it has the property to cure ulcers and very good for Stomach Irritation and other digestive ailments. I have also posted other recipe Manithakkali Keerai Kootu.

This Thannisaaru is one recipe which helps in harnessing the complete benefits of this miraculous green. After a day of fasting its good to start with this Thannisaaru as it acts as a coolant and make us feel comfortable and cure ulcers. This recipe has Coconut added which is also used in treating ulcers. The flavor imparted by Sesame and Cumin is unique and it serves as a good appetizer too. It can be served as soup or with hot rice.
